ADRIFT IN A CHICAGO LIFEBOAT

With a proposed $500 Million tax hike aimed at trying to shore up a sinking budget, maybe Chicago leaders need to start thinking more about lightening up their load and cutting their budget by making some tough decisions, instead of raising taxes on soft drinks and property taxes.

My advice to them, start thinking you’re on a lifeboat. You need to get rid of deadweight and those just eating up the supplies without helping to row to a point of safety.

A little different mindset is needed when you need to survive. Would you still keep all the deadwood on board and those just eating crackers and water as if they were at Golden Corral?

Then again, on a City of Chicago lifeboat, you’d have two oarsmen (one Port, one Starboard), four supervisors, four assistant directors, four Directors of Oars, one lookout, four assistant lookouts, two deputy assistant lookouts, four Helmsman, four assistant Helmsmen, three assistant Director Helmsmen and their staffs of four each, four Deputy Director Helmsmen, and one Director of Helmsmen and Rations, one Chief of Rations, four assistant Chief of Rations, and one water-boy, who actually hands out the rations and water.

Right there that’s 55 people with only two people rowing the oars. Now add the ten deadwood people who think they are on a Carnival Cruise all day and eating up the supplies like there is no tomorrow.

65 people with two people rowing the oars. Start to get the picture?

Now the boat springs a leak. Who needs to man the pump to keep the water from sinking the boat?

Wait, there are no pumpsmen or assistant pumpsmen on board and those in other jobs say, “Hey, not me, I’m a supervisor.” or “I’m not trained in that, plus my union restricts me from doing other work.”

So no one mans the pumps. The boat gets heavier and heavier as everyone mills around saying, “It’s not MY job“, while others ask, “Hey where are some more crackers?” and the two oarsmen finally collapse out of exhaustion.

ALL the Directors, supervisors and their assistants can’t believe the boat is not going anywhere and they are getting lower in the water. “Hey, where are more crackers?” can be heard in the distance.

THE CITY THAT WORKS, ISN’T WORKING

The City that Works has turned into the City that’s Sinking.

It’s a sad story, but how many other “lifeboats” are out there in the ocean of cities and suburbs with the exact same crew and attitude?

Chicago does not need 50 Aldermen.  20 would do fine and would be more in line with the City Council numbers based on population in New York City and Los Angeles. They also don’t need 18 Deputy Chiefs on the Chicago Police Department.  Cutting all these jobs and their associated budgets won’t affect services, but it will cut the costly “bureaucratic bloat” associated with running the city.

Cut spending and consolidate staffs. Services can be saved and no tax hike is necessary.

Start thinking in the 21st century instead of relying on raising the already maxed-out horse-and-buggy taxes from the 19th century.

TRUMP: POLITICALLY ACCURATE

This article looks at the political change in American politics that is not being clearly understood or reported on by those analyzing and reporting politics in the media:

Donald Trump is baffling many of the news channels because he is not playing their game. He is outraging some of the long-time politicians who think they are in an elite class beyond any criticism and who are out-of-touch with the common man (and woman).

Trump is not politically correct. I totally agree. He is politically accurate and that is something many average voters are identifying with and the career politicians just don’t seem to get.

People are already blocking out the time in August, so they don’t miss the first televised GOP debate. It will probably be a very highly rated show because many people want to see how Trump handles the rest of the candidates and probably more importantly, how the rest of the candidates are going to handle him.

Trump is going to make the GOP debates exciting and force other candidates to come up with real answers. Trump brings something to the table that neither of the GOP candidates brought in the last two elections – celebrity. Unfortunately, “celebrity” is now part of the skill set or character make-up that a Presidential candidate needs to have in order to attract the low-information voter.

Political experience may be a factor, but not as big a factor as “Flat-screen” celebrity. Many candidates have good political experience, but they are like watching the grass grow in their attempts to “Sell their platform”.

If they have nine other candidates for the debate, every one of them has to realize Donald Trump has a really good executive skill. He is fast on his feet when it comes to giving an answer to a question or a comment. He doesn’t need sheets of paper, 3×5 cards, or a teleprompter in front of him.

He is quick, speaks his mind (and heart), and that is important not just for the Presidency, but for any CEO or organizational president’s position.

Trump epitomizes the kid on the block who gets picked on by the established neighborhood bullies, but instead of cowering or running home, Trump sticks around to pummel the kid who picks on him and sends him home with a black eye instead. You may not agree with that. Too bad.

He is not going to get beat up by a career, do-nothing, politician who demeans him and his supporters, or by a smarmy, self-centered journalist who thinks he is going to corner him on some issue. He is going to fight back and give as good as he gets.

Well with Trump, he will probably give more than he gets. People want a fighter. And as General George S. Patton said, “America loves a winner.”

The liberal media needs to understand, Trump is not going to take a backseat to any candidate in this Primary. He also is not going to play the “insecure-to-take-on-the-opposition”, “politically correct” milk-toast candidate most in the News media expect the Republicans to field.

The People are fed up.

The People are fed up.

TRUMPLICANS and TRUMPOCRATS

If you think it’s just some Republicans supporting Trump, guess again. He is gaining support from everyone who is fed up with the same old candidates to select from in either party.

People see through the smarmy, East Coast media criticism. They know that this country needs someone very strong to go for fundamental change and reform to rebuild some of the weakened infrastructure which has developed in the last several years.

As both parties cringe at some of Trump’s reactions to other candidates’ barbs and name-calling, Trump is winning over both Republicans, Democrats and even Independents who are fed up with the Washington insiders.

Many in the news media just don’t get it. Third-graders, I mean “journalists”, like Chris Matthews and Chris Hayes on MSNBC just don’t know how to handle Trump’s bluntness. They don’t know how to try to put him down because he is not some small pushover who, at the sound of their first giggling criticism, is going to waffle or knuckle under. These politically correct reporters thrive on trying to belittle candidates who don’t share their same views of the world.

Also, Trump is no Sarah Palin and a Saturday Night Live skit is not going to torpedo Trump’s campaign or career. If anything, it will just galvanize it into something stronger.

Many say Trump will not survive in the long-run. I say, sit back and watch.

The more media people and political candidates try to talk him down, the more everyday people, whose opinions have not been heard in this country, are going to back him because he is their voice. He is pointing out problems, do-nothing government bureaucracies, and problems with illegal immigration that politicians want to sweep under the rug. Karl Rove and other “Strategists” better wake up and smell the Starbucks.

Is he a serious candidate or a clown? The question you should be asking yourself is: How serious are the others in failing to talk about critical issues and talking about how they themselves are going to fix them?

People want the impact of Trump to go into these Washington bureaucracies like the IRS, the Veterans Administration, the Attorney General’s office and other department heads who think they do not have to serve the people, serve our veterans, or answer to the people about their poor performance and be told, “You’re fired.” That would be no act of a clown.

Trump may just be the Champion for the Common man (and woman) and no other candidate on either party fits that bill. Why? They just don’t understand how fed up the people are.  The Silent Majority may just be back.

STOP THE CORPORATE SPEAK – IT’S LAME

Are you in an organization that uses a lot of “corporate speak”?  Does your management skirt around issues by using terms no one else knows except the people in your organization? Do they even realize they are not communicating as effectively as they should? (both internally AND externally)

JUST GET TO THE POINT!

It is more than a pet peeve to hear people talk in “corporate speak” instead of being politically accurate and just speaking succinctly.  I am sure you have heard some of the following in your organizations:

“Did you have a four-eyes review?”  Translation: Did you have two people review this document/ report?  When I first heard this, I thought it was a  derogatory statement.

“Are we all team players here?  Translation:  Are we all working together?  I like to counter this stupid question with, “No, I am NOT a team player,….(pause) I am a Team Leader.” Try that next time and watch your boss fall off the chair to the floor.

“Do you have line-of-sight on this project?” Translation: Do you have a direct view of what is happening?

“Did you hear about the GEM?” (Global Efficiency Model). “We are having an undocumented force reduction today.”  Or for the pragmatic, “we are having a layoff today.”

“Are we going back to BAU?” Translation: Are we going back to “business as usual”? Oh cool, using just initials. It must be a carry over of Tweeting.  ROTFLMAO.  OMG. IMHO leave the initials alone.  Speak the words.

Too many are using a lot of euphemisms and what I call, “corporate code words” to get their point across, but the sad thing is that they are NOT getting their point across.  It’s getting lost in translation.  It’s getting lost in people not understanding how the words are put together and what they are supposed to represent.

Get back to the basics. Get back to explaining things in plain language instead of corporate speak.  Especially, if you are dealing with people outside your corporate culture.

Communicating effectively between companies working on the same project is critical.  Communicating effectively between companies working on an international project where there is also a layer of multi-cultural differences is even more critical.

There was a student in an International class explaining the failure of communications between two employees of an international company that needed to work more effectively on  a project in China.

The director from the United States wanted to tell the accountant from China she needed to take a more assertive role.  Instead of telling her that plainly, he used a sports analogy that he thought would work, “You need to step up to the plate.”  Too bad she did not know anything about baseball.  Just think of her walking around all day trying to figure out what her boss said to her.

“You need to step up to the plate” – what does that mean to someone who does not know baseball?  Does he mean I should step up to the plate on the table? How do I do that?

That would be like someone from Asia telling someone from in the United States, “A frog’s back faces both the sun and moon everyday.”

What does that mean?  Too bad if you don’t know.  That is the trouble when you speak and no one can understands you because no one understands what you are trying to convey.

OTHER FILLERS FOR POOR SPEECH

Noticing someone’s inability to speak well was when they filled up all their sentences with “You know…..” in the front, middle, and end of the sentence.  It was pretty clear that they could not put a full sentence together without using  “You know” as the glue to keep a sentence together. “You know” was not a verb or a noun, but more of a “sentence glue” for those who could not get out a complete thought.

The latest “indicator” for lack of coherency is adding the word, “So” before speaking. It is something that is addictive as well. Other people start to talk the same way in the same corporate culture.  Do the examples ring a bell?

What is your company’s new product?

“Soooooo………… the new product we have introduced is……”

Tell me what are your plans after college?

“Soooooo………….now that I am graduated, I plan to look for a job.”

Tell me, what do you think of the current economy?

“Soooooo………….now that gas prices are lower, I think we are in a recovery.”

It sounds LAME.  The scary part is that you probably don’t know you’re doing it, BUT everyone who is listening to you does.

While we’re at it, look at all your PowerPoint presentations to see if you have any typos in them BEFORE you present.  Nothing worse than a typo to throw your audience off-track.

After one or two, the audience stops hearing you and what you are trying to sell and starts to look for the next typo.  The focus is to see how bad you put the presentation together and any point that you wanted to make is now lost to all the eager spell-checkers.

Nothing worse than seeing something like this on the opening slide:

COMPANY X AND IT’S LONG-TERM PLAN

Hmmmmm…. How many did not even see a typo?  Don’t worry, your audience will, and they will be looking for the next one on the following slides.  You just blew your presentation.

Add “So” before you speak and you really have earned the title of Executive Doofus of the Year.  “Sooooooo………this is our long-term plan for next year….”

Stop with the sugar-coated words and corporate speak.  It does NOT raise your stature in the organization and certainly not with people outside your organization trying to understand what you are talking about.

We need to get everyone on the same page when it comes to definitions and understanding the basic framework of any project. Corporate speak and using internal definitions does not move projects forward effectively.

Doesn’t matter if you are a Baby-Boomer, Gen Xer, or Millennial.  Clean up your act!

I have been looking forward to using this product ever since I heard that Apriori Beauty was developing it. I have not been disappointed. The shampoo is highly concentrated so you do not need a lot to get great suds without using SLS.

My hair type is oily but after washing, it was clean without being stripped of essential oils.

The conditioner is very thick and rich and works great. I have also used it to shave and it moisturizes my beard well. I also tried as a leave in conditioner and though it may not be suited for that it did not cause flacking when it dried as have other products I have tried.

I learned a lot that day about the good of NLP as I was one of those that only thought that NLP was used to convince people to buy stuff they really didn’t want.

I have wanted to get Kaya to do an interview with me for the longest time, but we have never been able to get the two of us in sync with schedules so I am so happy that we finally got him to give us some of his very precious time.

The call quality is not what I would have liked, but I did not want to reschedule this one because I believe what Kaya has to say will help a lot of people.

Neuro linguistic Programming (NLP)

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is an approach to communication, personal development, and psychotherapy created in the 1970s. The title refers to a stated connection between the neurological processes (“neuro”), language (“linguistic”), and behavioral patterns that have been learned through experience (“programming”) and can be organized to achieve specific goals in life.[1][2]

The founders of NLP, Richard Bandler and John Grinder, say that NLP is capable of addressing problems such as phobias, depression, habit disorder, psychosomatic illnesses, and learning disorders.[citation needed] Their stated aim was in “finding ways to help people have better, fuller and richer lives.”[8][9] Bandler and Grinder claimed that if the effective patterns of behaviour of exceptional people could be modeled then these patterns could be acquired by others. NLP has been adopted by private therapists, including hypnotherapists, and in management workshops and seminars marketed to business and government.[10][11]

Personal Note from the interviewer:

There are many who challenge NLP as pseudoscience and I would not argue with many of the findings of the studies which have been done, but I always believe the often there is no black and white. The truth is often somewhere in the middle.

What I do know is that the masters of marketing are using and have used NLP for many years. I have been to many many conferences with some of the greatest speakers and sales people in the world and they care about the numbers they sell to. They are continually testing techniques to sell more or to build better rapport with their audiences and they throw out what does not work, but these speakers and marketers continually use NLP concepts and techniques over and over again so, to me, this points to the probability that there are NLP techniques that work and can be very powerful.

There is no mysticism about NLP and not all the techniques will work with everyone in every situation. It is a tool that systematizes our responses in order to better communicate to your audience, clients or relationships.

I am no expert so that is my opinion. I have used a few NLP techniques to help clients get to a comfort level with me very quickly. I use mirroring and have found that it works extremely well. I have also used the anchoring technique and found that it worked, but I do not use it as it is not a technique that feels natural to me though I know many that love that technique.

Kaya’s NLP course went so much farther into how people react to different situations and how you can use these reactions to open up communications to their fullest potential.

Many may describe this book as irreverent and very way out there,  and it is meant to be. Not for shock value, but because Randy believes the playing field has changed so much that we need to get real and be able to change our “out of date” thinking now or possibly peril. 

We have seen technology change things for the better and the worse in a very short time and Randy believes that, not only do we need to embrace the change, but we have to get extremely creative and change our way of thinking and looking at the world, if we want to be successful in it.

This book will be called many things. A game changer, a look at the future or even crazy talk, but whatever you believe you will be changed by this book as once a mind is stretched, it is hard to put back.

One thing I know for sure is that Randy Gage doesn’t say things he does not mean and he explains in great detail why he believes what he is predicting and what you need to do to take advantage of the incredible changes yet to come.

I met Bob at a conference where we were both interviewing some of the more interesting people that spoke or attended there. I am used to doing interviews and after speaking with Bob, I was taken back by his request to interview me!

It is not often that I am asked to be interviewed. Bob was great and asked some great questions and we have become friendly since that interview.

I found out that Bob was producing his first business conference and took the opportunity to get back to Bob and ask him for an interview. I was very excited to get Bob to say yes, first so I could get him back and second because I have gotten to know Bob as someone that knows what he is doing and he loves to teach and help others find success.

Don Miguel had just flown in from Mexico and got to hang out in his room for a couple of hours before speaking in front of a packed room at the Enlightened Entrepreneur Summit in Anaheim, CA

After his talk he was surrounded for some time by fans and people that wanted to tell him what they thought or ask questions, get pictures get their books signed and on and on… I would be done.., but I walked up to Don and asked if he was up for an interview before he left. I barely got out the words when he came at me with a wonderfully loving inviting hug as if I was his best friend and he had been waiting in anticipation for me to arrive. I have been around many in the thought leader realm and this was different and wholly authentic and I have to admit it through me for a second.

Agreement 1

Don’t take anything personally – Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

Agreement 3

Don’t make assumptions – Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Agreement 4

Always do your best – Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

There is one more agreement Don Ruiz wrote about that he believes you discover after realizing the first four.

Agreement 5

Question Everything. “Don’t believe me, don’t believe others, don’t believe yourself.” Eliminating belief systems are one of the core teachings of the Toltec Path. Whenever you have a belief, you no longer perceive what is.

Also if someone says they have the true and only answer.. run the other way. Take the knowledge from all that suits your path and be willing to change your opinion swiftly as the world goes from flat to round and Earth no longer is the center of the universe.

Chet and I have been chatting over Twitter while Chet has been undergoing chemotherapy treatments after his bone marrow transplant.

It has been a tough one, I am sure, for his family and friends, but Chet is a fighter and he is not only coming back, but he is coming back better. Chet told me that he tried every natural, mystical and spiritual cure you can think of or name and more. Chet has learned a lot about himself and his body and has become really serious about his nutrition. We talked privately before the interview and I found out that he discovered what I have about sugar and starches….. Bad, bad, bad.

At the time of this interview Chet had 15 more days of chemo to go through, but his white cell counts and other tests were all extremely positive.

Chet is only working about 3 hours a day right now so I thank him so much for giving me one hour to just talk about stuff, but Chet is not good at just shooting the breeze and insisted on giving you two ways to double your sales.

This is a special show in which we will be discussing proposed federal legislation intended to establish a unified system of taxation of Internet sales.Our featured guests include:

  • United States Senator Michael Enzi of Wyoming, a co-sponsor of the Senate Bill;
  • Betsy Laird, Senior Vice President, Office of Global Public Policy for ICSC;
  • David French, Senior Vice President of Government Relations for the National Retail Federation;
  • Robert W. Wood, Esq. of Wood, LLP, a tax attorney who has written numerous articles for Forbes and specifically, regarding this issue;  and
  • Steven DelBianco, Executive Director of NetChoice, a coalition of trade associations, eCommer ce Businesses, and online consumers;

During this conversation, we will be exploring the reasons why these bills have been proposed, why federal the federal government has gotten involved in, what seems to be state taxation issues, who benefits from this legislation and whose interests will be most negatively effected.

The current legislation before congress includes the Main Street Fairness Act and the Marketplace Fairness Act, while the house has introduced the Marketplace Equity Act.  All three pieces of legislation propose methods of simplifying the taxation of Internet sales process so that Internet retailers may comply with state taxation requirements while avoiding the significant burden of complying with numerous and differing state requirements.

Proponents assert that the legislation does not impose any new tax but merely simplifies the process of compliance of state Use Tax codes, (We will discuss during the show what the difference is between a Use Tax and a Sales Tax).

Proponents also argue that these bills will allow cash strapped states and cities to generate more revenue from Internet sales, which were unintentionally excluded from older sales tax legislation as constitutionally interpreted by the United State Supreme Court.

Detractors argue, among other things that passage of these bills would effectively impose a new tax on, already overburdened taxpayers.

Here was my pitch:

Q. What do you do?

A. I consult with businesses to help them use Twitter.

A great short pitch right? I would say it and get little or no response. “Oh that’s great! Which way to the cheese platter” or “I don’t know how to use that Twitter thing yet”.

Ann told me about the Lizard or Old Brain and how it needed to hear what it wanted or it would shut down and put into hibernation, the conscious brain.

We took my pitch and changed it to…

At first I said sounds great… then I used the pitch. Most everyone replied with Really! How do you do that?, Can you do that for me., Wow I could use that service., Wow, I have a friend that really needs that…

The difference in response was night and day. Ann has hit on something really basic and useful and you have to listen to this recording because Ann goes into detail and shares over twice as much as she shared with me during that first meeting.
