CORPORATE CYBER-SABOTAGE: MORE THAN STEALING CREDIT CARD NUMBERS

Most people are worried about their credit cards being stolen, but more ominous problems with cyber attacks are being aimed at other parts of a corporation including tampering with facilities and manufacturing processes, stealing Intellectual Property (IP), and changing formulas and processing around so that it is next to impossible to revert back to the original systems and procedures. Corporate cyber-sabotage could be used by rival companies, foreign governments, or just cyber-anarchists who want to punish a corporation for their products or political stances.

HACKERS’ GOAL: SHUT DOWN THEIR PRODUCTION LINE

Just think if a huge company like GM, Caterpillar, or Ford got hit with a cyber attack focused on all the robotic systems in their assembly lines. Talk about getting “held up”, what if the systems were put in “Lock Down” mode? Or all the parameters set on various robotic tools like saws, drills, and welding machines got fed different information and coordinates which would render any type of production to zero output.

What if it was in a multi-staged attack where you first shut everything down, but then re-programmed the robots and automated machining so that when they were brought back up from a “disaster recovery mode” status to an “active status”, they would all have faulty, re-calibrated information in their cutting and manufacturing procedures? How easy would that be to unravel and fix all those changes and recalibrate all the robots so they were performing the right movements at the right time? Are corporate back-up systems as good as their executive staffs think they are?

Damaging a competitor’s core business may be a goal of a rival company or a rogue nation. It doesn’t matter who is initiating
the attack. What matters is, do you have the safeguards in place before the Tsunami of system failures hits your organization?

This isn’t a story line for a Die Hard movie anymore. It is reality and you can see governments getting into this as a form of electronic warfare and cyber retaliation.

Most CEOs may think about the possibilities of a cyber attack, but when they are asked for capital to harden facilities or hire qualified personnel who can safeguard resources, they don’t see the expenditure being necessary, especially if they are anticipating some big bonus. Cost-cutting executives and their organizations are the perfect target for these cyber criminals. If the cyber criminal knows the CEO is too cheap to approve monies for security, then it’s “easy pickings”.

This could happen and this is why more corporations needs to be aware of these more strategic approaches to corporate cyber-sabotage

Stealing credit card information is just the tip of the iceberg. Stopping an organization dead in its tracks because their electronic systems that manage and motivate the manufacturing process, is a much loftier goal.

INTELLIGENT INFRASTRUCTURE DESTRUCTION: CYBER ATTACKS

When a cyber attack wipes out an organization’s ability to conduct business, the question to the organization’s CEO becomes, “Have you properly maintained the organization’s infrastructure and its networks, so that it can still function as a viable business entity?”

What areas are you are supposed to manage back-up, and maintain? A CEO better know this for today’s cyber attack-infested marketplace.

A large cyber attack is to a corporate CEO, like a rogue snowstorm to a mayor facing re-election. If the plows and salt trucks don’t do their jobs and the city is left stranded from the ravages of the storm, the mayor does not get re-elected. On the corporate side, the CEO walks the plank.

Making a strategic assessment of an enterprise’s total business platform and its ability to withstand a cyber attack (or any disruption), is not for everyone. There are only a few quality firms that can approach this on an all-encompassing, strategic, executive view and not just an “outside techie” firm doing a review on the technical innards of a server farm or data center.

ESTABLISHING THE “RITE” APPROACH FOR AN ENTERPRISE
Each organization’s specific strategic assets need to be assessed for their susceptibility to corporate cyber-sabotage as well as other man-made or natural disasters. Let’s look at the various parts of the internal “Platform for Commerce” that supports an enterprise.

REAL ESTATE: What and where is the land that the enterprise sits on? Are there any issues/obstacles to be aware of? (Natural or Man-made)

INFRASTRUCTURE: What is in-place/ available/ accessible to the enterprise? What is the quality/redundancy of access to transportation? Rail? Airports? Power grid and network communications?

TECHNOLOGY: What technologies “run the business”? What in-place technologies are considered “Mission Critical”? Are there redundant network carriers providing Multi-Gigabit connectivity? Where else is redundancy needed? Where is it lacking? What other cyber/connectivity intelligent amenities are being used? What is the documentation?

Has the back-up systems ever been tested? (Sounds like a dumb question but you would be surprised at how many organizations have back-up plans as well as procedures and back-up hardware, but they have never been tested by the organization.)

ENTERPRISE CRITICALITY: How many applications are considered mission critical for the enterprise? To what level are these applications backed up and duplicated? How is it being funded in both its initial and operating phases? What impact do all the applications have on the enterprise’s regional sustainability? Global competitiveness?

There are more questions to ask and metrics to measure, but this gives you a good picture as to the methodology of the strategic Enterprise Assessment Framework (EAF) of what should be happening when it comes to assessing the internal “Platform for Commerce” within an organization or corporate enterprise.

CYBER ATTACKS ARE A MATTER OF WHEN, NOT IF THEY OCCUR
Cyber attacks are on the rise. According to a recent article on http://www.securityinfowatch.com :
According to the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC), there have been over 700 data breaches reported in the U.S. so far this year, a 26 percent increase over the same time period in 2013. Of the breaches that have been reported this year, the overwhelming majority have affected healthcare entities and businesses.

Corporate executives may not see this as a hot issue on their “Things to Do” List, but they should. This rise in cyber attacks is an indication it is going to become a “Top Five” issue with corporate CEOs and their executive staffs.

Famous last words in the mahogany CEO office suite, “This could never happen to us.”

When you look at any enterprise’s applications, you have to segregate them into various categories of criticality:
1. CRITICAL APPLICATIONS (Mission critical to the success of the enterprise. Should never be shut down or incapacitated. ALL of them should be totally redundant. (100% back-up))
2. NECESSARY APPLICATIONS (Everyday operations depend on these applications. Only a short period of Out-of-Service time can be tolerated.)
3. OPTIMAL APPLICATIONS (Could do without for a period of time. The business could still function.)

There is a shift going on now as more enterprises become more dependent on mission critical applications. Today, one out of every three applications are considered “Mission Critical” to the organizations. Moving forward, one out of every two applications will become “Mission Critical”. Design and operational heuristics must change to fit these new critical applications.

Selling products and services into this 21st century corporate “Platform for Commerce” environment requires an expertise in understanding multi-disciplinary skills and next-generation solutions. It is a multi-level sell when trying to promote new intelligent amenities for next-generation buildings, multi-venue entertainment centers, and intelligent business campuses.

With the growing threat of cyber destruction onto an enterprise’s intelligent infrastructure, CEOs cannot afford to take a wait-and-see attitude as to preventions, enterprise-wide assessments and applied security solutions. They also cannot depend on their legal or accounting advisors because those people have no real expertise in these matters. Get a broadly-focused, strategic technologist to assess your current situation.

MILLENNIALS: A TREASURE CHEST OF OPPORTUNITIES

How many Millennials do you know who are uncertain of their future? How many of them have any type of blueprint to success? How many of them have more than a part-time job? (Some have two, just to make more money, but many are still looking for a full-time, benefits-paying job.)

With so many changes and challenges in society today, old rules-of-thumb cannot be applied to develop careers or determine a direction to take with developing skill sets and seeking jobs. The same career advice cannot be regurgitated year-after-year because it is just not applicable anymore.


FRAMEWORKS FOR THE FUTURE

When I wrote my book, LOCATION LOCATION CONNECTIVITY, I wrote it to leave behind a legacy of broad-based knowledge and experience on high-tech issues covering next-generation real estate, infrastructure, and technology. These areas are converging and impacting regional Economic Development.

The book offers more than that. It offers some “frameworks for the future” discussing the ways of looking at things which can provide opportunities for people in the beginnings of their careers as well as those in the middle or end of their careers.

One of my friends who was reading the book, called me up to discuss what he thought about the book. He said, “I can’t believe how much stuff you have in this book.” He said this is a book that could easily become a classic.

His summary, “The book is a veritable Treasure Chest of Opportunities.”

I am humbled by his assessment and hope others get as much out of the book. I really would like to see Millennials pick up the book because they are the ones who seem disenfranchised with “traditional business cultures” in many organizations.

Those who already have a degree and are in debt from college loans must take a second look at what they can fit into and what will get them more than a minimum wage job. The promise “a college degree will unlock the doors to better opportunities” rings very hollow with many of them.

There are still opportunities out there, but the doors and locks have changed.

What worked before in positioning oneself for a good job doesn’t necessarily guarantee success today. You must have skills focused on Flexibility, Adaptability, Creativity, and Technology in order to be marketable in today’s economy. (FACT-based skills)

It’s all in the book. FACT-based education is much more critical than learning the Three R’s: The skill sets for Industrial Age jobs. The Three R’s? Rote, Repetition and Routine which add up to Regimentation.

The Three R’s may have been excellent skills for Industrial Age jobs, but they are not going to get you far in today’s and tomorrow’s challenging jobs where nothing is routine and there is no such thing as “a routine day.”

Public school systems are not teaching for today’s jobs and there is a disconnect when people graduate. If they go on to college, there is no guarantee those FACT-based skills will be part of their curriculum.

SPEND $40 BEFORE SPENDING $40,000
Before deciding to get into a college curriculum that is probably 20 years old and will cost about $40,000 for the first year, buy the book for $40 and get a better picture of where things are going and where the opportunities of the future will be.

You may not need a degree. If you do, choose wisely. It is not about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as much as it is about FACT (Flexibility, Adaptability, Creativity, and Technology) skills.

Remember, 21h century challenges may not be solved by 20th century solutions.

COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE: HOW TO MINIMIZE THE COMPETITION

What amenity can a building owner or property management firm add to a building to eliminate 90% of their competition in today’s commercial real estate market? The answer: Broadband Connectivity.

This is not hype. This is not conceptual or theoretical. It is fact.

In performing research for a planning project I worked on while consulting to the DuPage Business Center, an 800-acre high-tech business park in Illinois, I found that searching for Class A space (20,000 square feet) in the surrounding area came up with a total of 60 available properties.

With that many properties offering space, it would be an easy time to get them to compete on price until the price per square foot was driven down to a very low amount. With owners hungry for a tenant, we could probably negotiate a year free on a five-year lease.

As soon as I added Broadband Connectivity (multiple gigabit speeds) to the upfront requirements for the tenant space, the amount of buildings available with that amenity dropped to five. That is over a 90% reduction in the amount of buildings available that could handle that type of request.

In that scenario, the building owner would not have to sacrifice dropping the price per square foot and could focus on more unique strengths of the property. End result: The property owner keeps up the profitability of the building and attracts the premium tenants.

20th CENTURY REAL ESTATE SOLUTIONS CANNOT SOLVE 21st CENTURY TENANT ISSUES
Hear that huge shattering sound of glass, steel and marble crashing down to the ground? That is the shattering of decades’ worth of commercial real estate concepts that don’t work anymore.

The sad part is many in the Commercial Real Estate (CRE) market need to tune into this deafening thunder. The status quo has been shattered and shattered again by the implementation of WiFi. DAS and Smartphone networks into many venues. Commercial real estate needs to offer what was before a hoped for, that has become a “must-have”.

Selling products and services into this 21st century integrated real estate environment requires an expertise in understanding multi-disciplinary skills and next-generation solutions. Part of my book, Location Location Connectivity, deals with changing out Master Planning concepts. Areas of concern like power and network infrastructure services have become something to be added to the upfront planning of the property and not as some after-thought once the tenant signs the contract.

The reality is the tenant is NOT going to sign any contract unless these amenities are already present and available. When it comes to Master Planning, both power and network services have to be implemented upfront before any tenant will buy into the property.

WHAT IS IMPORTANT?
If you are into property management or ownership of Class A Buildings, do you want to eliminate the vast majority of your competition in today’s commercial real estate market? Start taking a look at implementing intelligent amenities before potential tenants require them and you have to do things in a crisis mode.

LOCATION LOCATION CONNECTIVITY – WHO HAS THE PLAN?

At the HetNet Expo in Chicago on October, 16th, I asked a question to a regional Manager from Verizon at one of the morning panel discussions. I thought it was a good question, but did not elicit a good answer. This concerns me and should concern you.
“With the amount of wireless devices going from 10 Billion devices today to 50 Billion devices in 2020, what are the strategic plans of your company, Verizon, when it comes to building out network infrastructure?”

It was a straightforward question and I expected a definitive answer. When you look at the timetable for meeting the 5G Network objective, it is pretty clear they only have five years or a half a decade to plan, design, and implement a more robust and resilient network infrastructure that can handle a huge amount of new traffic.

We are supposed to be running in a 5G Network environment by 2020 and that means a lot of things to a lot of people. One thing it means is that all the carriers, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and Verizon have to do major upgrades to their networks.

WHO HAS THE PLAN?
Instead of getting a good answer, I got some song-and-dance from the Verizon Wireless manager and an even worse “wango tango of buzz phrases and euphemisms” from the moderator of the panel, who clearly did not know what he was talking about.

You would think they would be all over that question talking about the path to expansion of their infrastructure as well as the potential expansion of available network services to provide companies and individuals with more choices for faster capabilities.

If you have a plan, you would point out three or four of its major initiatives and tick off a timeline for their expected executions. Nothing like that came out of the panel discussion. It was more of the “these are big companies with big brains figuring all this out” rhetoric that did not impress me (or others).

Carriers must have a real strategic plan to meet this real challenge and I just don’t see it. Five years is not a lot of time for all this to transpire and be done right.

SOME IN REAL ESTATE ARE STARTING TO ‘GET IT”
In talking to some others who were at the HetNet Expo, I spoke with one person who told me his company was trying to sell this one real estate owner on adding more connectivity into his building for over three years, but their offers were always turned down. He said the building owner was now trying to lock in a new anchor tenant and part of the lease requires they have broadband connectivity in the building.

He said now the owner is scrambling and wants them to come in and build out his building with new antennae immediately because he is afraid he will lose this anchor tenant to someone else if he fails to upgrade his building.

I told him more of that is going to start happening as tenants start demanding intelligent amenities as part of the basic lease package and if it isn’t available, they will be moving to new facilities. It is already happening.

I discussed some of these concepts in the Keynote I presented. Next-generation real estate needs to have a whole new set of terminology to describe this paradigm shift and the industry needs to understand the new concepts.

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL IS MISSION CRITICAL, ISN’T IT?

The recent employee sabotage of Aurora, Illinois’ Air Traffic Control center which brought air traffic to an abrupt halt brings up some huge questions:

- “Isn’t that type of control center mission critical?
– Shouldn’t a control center like that be backed up?
– Why wasn’t it backed up, especially after a 1998 GAO study said it was dangerous not to have it redundant?
– Who’s in charge?

WHAT DOES MISSION CRITICAL MEAN?

I have worked in mission critical systems and intelligent infrastructure for my whole career spanning over 35 years from Bell Laboratories designing software to run the public switched telephone network (PSTN) to working with the City of Chicago on planning and designing their Emergency 911 Center to working with the Chicago Mercantile Exchange on trading floor technologies as well as overall networks connecting GLOBEX users internationally.

In addition, I have worked with more than several companies on their call centers, manufacturing and international networks which would also be considered “mission critical” because that’s where a great amount of their business came through whether it was a catalog sales company (Spiegel’s) to a major bank (Sanwa Bank) to a consumer electronics company (JVC) or a pharmaceuticals company (Abbott Labs).

Mission critical means you cannot go down. You cannot have a single point-of-failure. You cannot afford to be down for your business.

Mission critical means you need redundant power supplies, you need redundant network connections and you need redundant processing power to maintain the applications (computers and data bases that are completely duplicated)

With all that being said, whoever designed the Air Traffic Control center had to have those same types of basic design concepts when they were building this center. With something as critical as managing aircraft in the sky, you would think that you either had a fully backed-up system that the controllers to switch to OR enough back-up within the network of air traffic control centers to handle the overload caused by one or two centers going completely out on the network grid.

HOUSTON (AND CHICAGO)…………WE HAVE A PROBLEM

The May 1998 GAO Study on Air Traffic Control (ATC) Weak Computer Security Practices Jeopardizes Flight Safety (http://www.gao.gov/assets/230/225741.pdf ) concluded:

The FAA has not analyzed the threats and vulnerabilities, or developed
safeguards to protect 87 of its 90 operational ATC computer systems and 8
of its 9 operational ATC telecommunications networks.

The FAA does not have a well-defined security architecture, a security concept of operations, or security standards, and does not consistently include well- formulated security requirements in specifications for new ATC systems

The FAA has recognized for several years that its vulnerabilities could
jeopardize, and have already jeopardized, flight safety.

There are definite problems today as there were 16 years ago, so where has everyone been in the last 16 years besides collecting a check?

You need to take into consideration new network, as well as power, requirements for mission critical applications.

Most buildings need to undergo a transformation as to how they connect into the fabric of network infrastructure within the region. A single connection equates to a potential single-point-of-failure. Many building owners need to assess whether or not they want to incur the expense of adding a second route for communications into the
building.

We have to get the Air Traffic Control enters up-to-par with other mission critical buildings which support corporate (and government) applications. This should have been done over a decade ago.

WHAT HAPPENED TO QUALITY AT FEDEX?

I remember when FEDEX was a top-notch company with sharp AND professional people supporting you in critical time periods when you had to get things like proposals and reports out to distant locations. You could set your watch to their pick-up and delivery times. What happened???

Last Monday, I sent a CD disk with the final copy of my book to my printing company by PRIORITY OVERNIGHT and paid $32 and thought that was HIGH. Friday, I had to send another disk, so I go and ask for PRIORITY OVERNIGHT (10:30AM) for Monday (today) and it’s over $50.

WHAT????? Then I asked for the price of the afternoon delivery (3:30PM) and it was still $37.25. HOW COULD THAT BE???

I pointed out I sent the same exact package to the same exact place on Monday night and it cost me $32 overnight, how could sending something from Friday night to Monday morning cost so much more? No answer from the guy at the counter.

Gave him my FEDEX number that I had for over 25 years, but nothing happened. The account has been dormant for too long a time (well, even though I just paid for something last Monday night, I was still considered a “cash only” account). So much for being a long-time customer.

Employee #2014904 at the store I went to was no help. He could not look up anything but said, this is the price coming up on the computer. He did not do anything to check the exact same package delivery that was done four days earlier. He didn’t really care either, so I decided it wasn’t worth discussing. Just pay the inflated price for lower-quality service and walk away.

WHERE DID THE QUALITY AND PERFORMANCE GO?

I was really ticked off, went home and called FEDEX Friday night. After 23 minutes on the phone with one Rep I could not even understand and then a Manager, Jay, who was a little smarter, I got the thing right – delivered by 10:30AM – but I still have to call billing to rectify the charges AFTER the package is delivered. AND, the package was going to Tennessee – that is where FEDEX’s planes are headquartered.

As I told the second customer service manager on the phone, “Hey, this is FEDEX, not Joe Blow’s Delivery Service.” I had a very high regard for FEDEX 20-25 years ago. They were top-notch and their people knew their job. Today, one out of three knew their job.

What executive screwed up FEDEX???? Who decided overseas call centers were a good customer service move and what happened to professionals manning the counters?

Now I am thinking next time I need to ship something – I might just go to the Post Office. My expectations at the Post Office were never high, but seeing FEDEX in such a disarray, maybe it’s time to go back to the Post Office?

TAKE OUR SURVEY AND GET A DISCOUNT NEXT TIME

Next time? On my FEDEX receipt it said, “Take our survey and get a discount the next time.”

Thanks, but no thanks FEDEX. Writing this article is much better way to get someone to wake up and look at their business, than calling a different 1-1800 number to answer a lame questionnaire.

There is a definite problem both at the front lines of the stores as well as the 1-800 number for FEDEX support.

WHO’s FAULT IS IT?

Who is in charge? You can’t blame low-level clerks for inconsistent billing. Or can you?

Whatever your job is, learn it, and perform it well. If you’re the boss, make sure people are doing their jobs well and recognize them for doing a good job.

We cannot get better as a country until we figure out what we are doing wrong – and fix it.

Now, with the guy who burned down the Air Traffic Control data center in Aurora, Illinois that stopped all flights across four states over the weekend, who knows if the package will arrive on time? Shouldn’t control centers like that be totally backed up? That’s another story (Which I will be writing about)

In October, I will be the Keynote Speaker at HetNet Expo in Chicago on October, 15th. The conference will be held at the Chicago Hilton and I expect a good cross-section of professionals will be there.

Why? There is a convergence of Real Estate, Infrastructure, and Technology going on and it is all focused on impacting the regional economic stability and sustainability of every municipality worldwide. To compete in the 21st century marketplace, broadband connectivity and redundant power are key intelligent amenities organizations must have in order to support their mission critical applications. In addition, most people are using Smartphones and Tablets as their new “edge technology.” Broadband connectivity is a “must have” in commercial buildings, and not a “hoped for” by this tech-dependent market segment.

Most commercial buildings do not offer redundant power sources or redundant high-speed network access from two different carriers. Real estate owners and property management companies have to address buildings which cannot compete for 21st century tenants.

Those who are selling WiFi, DAS and integrated Smartphone solutions must realize the market is wide-open for their business solutions.

NEW TERMINOLOGY FOR REAL ESTATE

Next-generation real estate needs to have a whole new set of terminology to describe its new capabilities. One white paper I wrote several years ago while working on an 800-acre high-tech real estate project, discussed the new names for next-generation industrial and office parks. Intelligent Business Campuses (IBCs) are the new names for those multi-building facilities supplying intelligent amenities like redundant power and redundant broadband connectivity to each tenant through intelligent infrastructure. In doing some research while writing the white paper, I found out that in Asia, they refer to these next-generation business campuses as Intelligent Industrial Parks (IIPs)

Other multi-venue platforms include IRECs. An IREC is an Intelligent Retail/ Entertainment/ Convention Center (IREC) complex which focuses on cross-marketing the venues to every visitor who decides to attend or shop at one of the buildings within the coverage of the wireless broadband capabilities that are designed to service the complex.

These concepts will be some of the material I will be discussing in my Keynote Speech. The concepts are covered in detail in my book, LOCATION LOCATION CONNECTIVITY which will be available later in October. (The ISBN # is 978-0-9906460-4-4 for this 380-page book.)

The book is a culmination of work and research done in the last several years on various high-tech real estate projects, several white papers including one I wrote for the US Department of Homeland Security on Intelligent Infrastructure: Securing Regional Sustainability and proven procurement, strategic technology management and team dynamic concepts taught throughout my years at Northwestern University in both the undergrad and Executive Masters programs. It also covers experiences from my consulting engagements.

HIRING MILLENNIALS: HIRING ROCK STARS OR ROADIES?

I spoke at the second Annual INFORM conference on Big Data and Analytics at the University of Chicago’s Gleacher Center on a panel discussion entitled: Big Data Analytics: The Power of Practice.

There were over 100 people there from various companies like Walgreen’s, Accenture, Nielsen, and others as well as some academics from the major universities around Chicago.

The University of Chicago also has a graduate program in Analytics, so there were also several people there who were currently enrolled in their Masters’ program. The conference featured speakers from academic institutions to companies that were in various industry segments.

The one session I happened to sit in on was very eye-opening. The Chief Analytics Officer of this Chicago-based financial company talked about how focused they were on their young staff and how they had a whole program to nurture them because in today’s market, good talent is hard to find AND harder to keep. He had my attention because he was saying the right words.

He discussed setting up a college recruitment program and focusing on those who looked promising. He talked about their sophisticated internship program and how they determined upfront, the right talent to “fit their different product teams.”

He also talked about knowing who the “best of the best” were and that because of the competition for good people, you need to identify who your “rock stars” are and make sure they know you know.

WE TAKE CARE OF OUR ROCK STARS
Being myself, I was more in a “politically accurate” mode than a politically correct mode, so I had to comment on this executive’s big pitch about hiring graduates and younger people. It sounded like a pretty comprehensive program that reminded me of something like Bell Telephone Labs where I worked at in the beginning of my career.

The question I asked and thought the answer was going to be a definite “yes” was, “Do you have a tuition reimbursement program for these “Rock Stars”?” The answer was no. WHAT?

Credibility? BANG. ZERO. Are we talking about hiring “Rock Stars” or just “roadies”?

Well, wait a second. You went through 15 minutes of why it is so important to focus on the motivations and aspirations of these recent graduates so that they can do a good job and not walk away to another company, tuition reimbursement should be a given.

Rock stars? I think not. If someone is really good and there is no investing into their skill sets, they are going to walk. To be brutally honest, I felt that this was just another company that focuses on the “talent of the day,” gives it a “you are special to us” sales-pitch, burns it up, and then goes out and recruits the next “bunch of roadies” for next year’s tour.

Real investing – like paying for a grad degree or at least paying for 50% is what is needed to retain talent, not getting them enrolled in the one-hour free webinar on analytics. Or having some rah-rah event for “team-building”.

Let’s cut the corporate-speak as well as the awarding of a “This is a good place to work award because they have an Expresso Latte machine and lets you wear jeans to work” by junior journalists who don’t have a clue on what a good workplace environment is.

When it came time to give my two cents in the panel discussion, I ripped into some of this thought process. I spoke about building team dynamics within coursework in college – and not give everyone just individual projects to work on for their grade. Another professor in the panel agreed with me. Too many school do not focus on building people’s social and team skills while they are in college. Waiting until they get on the job is too late.

Insights for buying systems and technology from my perspective on the panel:
There is no such thing as a new, $5,000 Rolls-Royce. You want the performance, the quality, and the engineering – you need to pay for it.

Same goes for if you are not spending much money: There is no such thing as a Formula One Yugo. $5,000 is not going to get you 0-60 in 2.4 seconds.

A woman in the audience asked, “How do we push our children into the right direction?” I grabbed the mic and said, “Stop coddling them.

As to Millennials, there is no “special sense” about them. They want what we all wanted when we started our career: A good-paying job, a good (and understanding boss), and a fair chance to put forth effort in exchange for a decent reward, AND a place to grow professionally.

I had several younger analysts come up and thank me for pointing out the shortfalls of most companies today. They said I “nailed it on the head” as far as describing what goes on at their companies.

Companies do not invest in the employee and just work them until they leave. Good talent goes out the door and you have to start from square one again. Are you really saving money with that hiring approach? I don’t think so when you are dealing with something as sophisticated as operational analytics and statistics.

NOTE TO HIRING MANAGERS OF COMPANIES: You don’t get Superman by paying Jimmy Olson wages. Good people cost money not only upfront, but if you want to retain them you need to invest in them.

The argument that if you invest in people, they are going to walk – is a bad judgment call. If you don’t invest in them, the good ones WILL walk.

What we need today are more work environments like Bell Labs and not Taco Bell.

NOTE TO RECENT GRADS: Come to work on time. Dress for success. Do your job well and you will be rewarded well. We will INVEST in you. (That is what the company should be telling you – and taking action on, like a tuition reimbursement program.)

If you are buying off on the “Let’s paddle on the Lake” event or the “Clean up this part of the Forest after we take a zip line through it”, don’t tell me your “special” and need to be coddled. You’re just this year’s roadie. We’ll use you until we find someone to replace you after you burn out.

Come to work dressed like you are flying in the corporate jet, not like you are here to wash it down. As I advised some in an Executive Masters class once who came in dressed too raggedy, “Casual doesn’t mean Homeless.”

Young people are looking for real leadership – and they can see through the phonies. You know you are right when the next day you get all these people wanting to be in your LINKED IN network.

CARLINI-ISM: “It’s good to be the pragmatic Josey Wales in an environment of snake-oil salesmen and unarmed intellects. Few of us still speak with “words of iron”, but when we do, we strike fear in those who are the double tongues.”

Saturday, August 23, 2014 we will celebrate our third year of “Rock the Block” at Rodney Square in Wilmington, Delaware. From 12 Noon until 5 PM, great local bands fill Rodney Square and several blocks square radius with great music on a summer day. But, it’s not just about the music.

Because of sponsors like CityReach, The Way Ryders Motorcycle Ministry, Immanuel Church, Iron Faith Fellowship Church and Delaware House of Prayer of Wilmington, we are able to help the people of Wilmington in tangible ways, face to face. The grills are ready, the food donations are in, the clothing donations are organized, the resource, shelter, recovery/addiction services and anti-abuse organizations are coming with information packets, the army of face-painters, game players, balloon creature creators, dancers, encouragers and prayer ministers are ready to rock ‘n roll. It is a huge undertaking. If all goes as planned we will hand out 1400 meals that day. We pray that we are able to also touch people with the love of GOD and meet their immediate physical needs and provide encouragement and positive avenues for change.

The problem of homelessness is multi-faceted and has many deep roots. No matter what types of stereotypes you have been taught to believe, homeless people are not all addicts..homeless people are not all lazy…homeless people are not all criminals. Many are US Veterans, families and people who through a turn of events or loss of job, or even sickness or mental illness landed on hard times and down-spiraled with no hope of getting back up.

So this Saturday, we have the following resolves:

  • We WILL make a difference
  • We WILL feed the hungry
  • We WILL clothe the underprivileged
  • We WILL produce a joy-filled environment for those who need one desperately
  • We WILL provide hope through helpful REAL solutions
  • We WILL provide resources for viable change
  • We WILL NOT judge a book by its cover
  • We WILL NOT turn a blind eye to people in need
  • We WILL love GOD with all our hearts, minds, souls, spirits, bodies and…

Everybody loves a winner. And when I first got cancer, I was such a winner. I had faced a malignant melanoma diagnosis, a difficult, permanently scarring surgery, and a painful recovery with flying colors. I was, both friends and strangers alike told me admiringly, a “survivor.” Then a year later I was rediagnosed. Metastatic this time. Stage Four. And suddenly I wasn’t a winner any more.

Growing up, I was always the kid picked last in gym class, the one nobody really wanted on their teams. When I got Stage Four cancer, it was a lot like that. I wasn’t the popular survivor any more. I wasn’t a feel good champion of pluck and survival. Some of my friends looked awkwardly at their feet when I came into the room. Others told me – with great authority – that I just needed a positive attitude and I could beat this thing. Some flat out dumped me. It was a lonely, weird place. But you know who needs a team most? It’s not the popular kid. It’s the scared, lonely one in the back. I never needed help and support and basic kindness more than I when I was at Stage Four, and yet I never felt more invisible. And almost as deep as my fear of the cancer that was growing within my body was the profound sense that I had somehow let everybody down. That I was a disappointment.

Fortunately, soon after my devastating news, I joined a local cancer support group. Even before my first meeting, I knew it was the right place for me because of its simple four word slogan. “Come as you are.” There, it didn’t matter that I was Stage Four, that my odds were slim. There, I didn’t feel like I was on death row, I wasn’t a failure in my personal version of “Survivor: Cancer Island.” In my support group, I could just come as I was, every week, with no expectations, no performance anxiety.

People with metastatic cancer tend to be ignored in the public discourse of cancer. We don’t fit the profile of the upbeat warrior, triumphant and bald. And so, we often remain unseen. Mysterious. Definitely a little spooky. I certainly didn’t know much about what the terrain was like until I found myself on it. All I knew was that it had to very, very bad for there to be no Stage 5. And so, when my oncologist told me I was Stage Four, I was, unsurprisingly……………

COMCAST TIME-WARNER MERGER: NEEDS CORRECT LEADERSHIP

The latest merger being questioned is the COMCAST Time-Warner merger which many experts are weighing in on. The problem is some are looking at the wrong end of the horse when they say it’s a bad merger.

In several articles and editorials that I have read, the authors and columnists look at the COMCAST/ Time-Warner (CTW) merger as a bad thing for cable. All the articles seem to focus on the cable industry and content, yet none are even making the argument about the new merged company, let’s just call it CTW, taking on AT&T and Verizon for the customers in the high-speed data markets. Broadband connectivity needs some competition and if you are going to be a competitor, you need some real money to compete in the capital-intensive communications industry.

WHAT BUSINESS ARE WE IN?

When cable companies first came onto the market, their CEOs were not focused on being part of the network infrastructure layer and looking at themselves as a communications infrastructure company. Their focus, and the definition of what business they were in, was the entertainment business.

They developed the delivery system for entertainment content. They did not think about building a communications infrastructure for extended use, even though they were. They were focused on bringing content into homes and did not initially focus on the long-term engineering of their cabling infrastructure. Designing and engineering the delivery system was just a necessary evil.

Now, with the need for real network infrastructure handling high-speed applications, the cabling industry already has a big footprint of cabling which can go head-to-head with anything AT&T has in place.

WHO NEEDS TO RUN THIS MERGED GOLIATH?

They need a CEO who understands who the new major competitors are. The CEO should be looking at AT&T and Verizon as their big competitors, not smaller cable companies or dish companies.

If I was the CEO, I would be looking at how to compete with AT&T and Verizon in the area of broadband connectivity. I would be establishing a whole gameplan to enter each one of their internet subscribers with an alternate high-speed service for their internet business.

There is a huge market out there because AT&T’s U-Verse is so limited. In an earlier article, I pointed out that if you have U-Verse, you cannot get a second line of U-Verse into your house. You can get a dial-up line, but nothing high-speed. (See http://onpurposemagazine.com/2014/01/02/att-misses-the-mark-with-u-verse/ )

I already have the solution at my house. I have U-Verse coming in and I have COMCAST coming in for internet only. I have both network and carrier diversity which is more than 96% of the residential and commercial buildings have as their connectivity amenity.

Buildings with one connection to one network carrier’s central office are obsolete. That was the connectivity solution for the 19th and most of the 20th centuries. This is a great example of what was “best practice” in the last century is not obsolete in this century.

You cannot use a 20th century solution to solve 21st century connectivity issues. Mission critical applications demand redundant connections (preferably in diverse networks).

We need more choices at the end-user’s home for internet connectivity. With competition, prices will go down, not up. With competition, we will be able to accelerate speeds and be competitive within the global markets.

We need to raise the awareness of competitive strategies as well as raise the speeds of connectivity to the end-user. Having another formidable opponent can only force AT&T and Verizon to raise the bar when it comes to speeds going to the end-user. The faster we get to having a ubiquitous network providing gigabit speeds to the end-user, the faster we will re-take our leadership position in the global economy.

History

CREDAA was founded in pre-launch in January of 2010 and was first developed starting on August 20th 2009.

CREDAA is the brainchild of Scott Miller and Warren Samek, both National Commercial Account Executives with Fidelity National Title in Seattle, WA and JW Najarian, formally a commercial lender with Pathfinder Commercial Mortgage and the Founder of The Commercial Real Estate Professional Investor Group out of Los Angeles.

After the real estate and stock markets fell in September of 2008 the founders envisioned a commercial real estate collapse coming as the CRE market tends to lag just around 2 years from the residential market. We believe now that due to the magnitude of the market and residential market crashes, the commercial collapse is happening at a quicker pace.

Due to the TARP plan we believe the banks are holding troubled assets at an alarming rate and furthermore, that if these assets are held too long, that the market recovery will be much longer than it needs to be.

The founders came up with the idea that if the industry had a place to be able to work together at finding solutions, that the recovery could be sped up. The founders believe that an association of industry professionals and investors can, given the most current information, data and education, find and implement solutions that will help banks, brokers, lenders, investors and property owners re-work or get out from under troubled assets with the least losses.

Mission Statement

CREDAA is dedicated to, discovering solutions to the troubled assets market to help and guide in supporting, enlightening, educating and engaging our member base and the industry on the current state of Commercial Real Estate, Distressed, toxic, unstable, troubled Assets or Non-performing Notes, by using technology, seminars, lectures, symposiums, webinars, teleseminars, and other media to deliver high quality and pertinent industry news, views, content, analytics and analysis and education to legitimate investors, brokers, lenders, industry professionals and sellers to communicate, participate and work together in on-going daily forums. CREDAA will also provide professionals a forum to promote themselves by listing members and their services in order to allow other members to build professional teams nationally to get projects moving.

Vision Statement

CREDAA, as an association, will be a powerful information resource and community for the commercial real estate and financial industry. CREDAA will effect positive change. Employing our mission to support and educate the industry to help find win-win solutions for financial institutions, lenders, brokers, buyers and other professionals can use and utilize to help move these assets into the public realm. As a group, we will assist the economy by turning around our current bad debt in Commercial Real Estate markets.

Goals

To provide brokers, lenders, banks, investors and other CRE industry professionals, education, solutions, resources and other support to help them in the disposition, acquisition, valuation and financing of CRE Distressed, Toxic, Unstable or troubled assets and non-performing notes. Become a membership of companies and individuals operating in the commercial real estate, investment, finance, and banking industries.

CREDAA is a professional organization dedicated to the aquisition or distribution of commercial distressed assets and notes.

NEW CREDAA

In July of 2011 Leonard Mangriquez of ALB Commercial Capital took over the reigns of CREDAA taking the focus off of CREDAA Connect and placing it at http://www.CREDAA.com. This change added needed functionality and added high level CRE industry training.

ALB Commercial still runs the http://www.CREDAA.com site, but has decided to focus on the lending side of the industry.

Sadly CREDAA Connect has been taken down. Here is what I saved from the front page of CREDAA Connect.

Closing Letter to CREDAA Connect Members

Hello members of CREDAA Connect. In August of 2009 a group of users from The Commercial Real Estate Professionals and Investors Group CREPIG.com got together to start a site that would help tie investors to distressed commercial properties.

We had high hopes, but as most of you know, at that time it was impossible to find any inventory that penciled out for investors and the banks were holding or should I say hoarding most of the marketable inventory.

With advisory board members like the late Frank Maguire Co-Founder of FedEx & KFC and many others (see http://onpurposemagazine.com/2014/04/11/the-commercial-real-estate-distressed-assets-association-credaa-story-2009-to-2011/) we worked hard to blaze new trails in an ailing industry.

This proved to be an almost impossible task as the banks would not release inventory or funds.

In 2011 Leonard Manriquez of ALB Commercial Capital took over the site which worked to educate, enable and help connect the thousands of investors, property owners and brokers with a site that allowed first class networking, resource development and education. Leo did a great job, but the industry was still taking a beating and ALB Commercial Capital has decided to make their priority lending in the commercial and multifamily markets.

Apple Blueberry Delight

Ingredients:

  • 4 medium apples, unpeeled
  • 2 cups blueberries
  • 1 tbsp. trans-fat free, lite margarine
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg
  • ½ tsp. orange peel, finely grated
  • 1 tbsp. orange-flavored liqueur
  • 2 tbsp. agave nectar
  • 3 tbsp. orange juice

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, mix the agave, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set it aside.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the orange juice and peel. Core and thinly slice the apples; toss with the juice.
  3. Place a wok over medium heat. When the wok is hot, add the margarine. When melted, add the sugar mixture and cook, stirring constantly, for about 1 minute.
  4. Add the apple mixture to the wok and stir-fry until the apples are soft (about 3 minutes). Add the liqueur, bring to a boil, and boil for about 1 minute. Add the blueberries and stir-fry until the sauce is thickened. Serve hot, topped with whipped cream, if desired.

Chicken with Pistachio Citrus Sauce

Chicken Dish

Ingredients:

  • 4 ea. orange
  • 1 lb. chicken breast
  • ¼ tsp. black pepper
  • 2 tsp. canola oil
  • 2 tsp. orange zest
  • 2 tbsp. green onions, minced
  • 1 tsp. dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp. pistachio nuts, toasted
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • ½ cup reduced sodium chicken broth

Directions:

  1. Halve one or more oranges and squeeze to get 1/2 cup juice. Slice the remaining oranges,
  2. Sprinkle the chicken with pepper and salt, if desired.
  3. Saute chicken in the oil until cooked through but still moist and tender.
  4. Over medium-high heat, add the juice, zest, green onion, chicken broth and mustard to the pan drippings, stirring to make a sauce. A

TERABIT SPEEDS. CHICAGO RFQ NOT EVEN CLOSE

Terabit speeds are what we should be aiming for as a solid goal for any major metropolitan city’s backbone network infrastructure objective. If we really want them to be a leader in global broadband connectivity tomorrow, this is the bar to set today. If you set the bar that high, and only attain 50% of its goal, you still will be world-class.

Evidently, no one told that to those who developed and released the Chicago RFQ for “a gigabit or near-gigabit network”.

Chicago has just sent out an RFQ for Broadband Infrastructure Expansion (#122737) which asks for speeds that are obsolete.

Gigabit or near-gigabit? For a network that will not be operational for at least another 24 to 36 months?
This is obsolete before they send the first packet across.

An 800-acre business park in the Chicago suburbs that I discuss in my upcoming book and was an adviser to, installed 40 Gigabit per second (40Gbps) connectivity several years ago. It’s operational TODAY. Want to be competitive today? The going speed is 40Gbps moving to 100Gbps in a short timeframe.

In my book, I go around the world discussing examples of other next-generation business parks which offer 10Gbps, 20Gbps, or better network speeds serving their tenants.

Chicago’s statement, in its RFQ declaring

….to ensure that Chicago is prepared to meet the demands of a 21st century economy.

The City’s first step toward achieving affordable high-speed internet access for all Chicagoans will target seven Innovation Zones with gigabit-or near –gigabit -speed broadband and focus on providing immediate access to businesses, universities, and organizations located in these core industrial and commercial area

rings pretty hollow in comparison.

“Prepared to meet the demands of a 21st Century economy”?? With one gigabit OR LESS network speeds to end users? This is supposedly to get the city more competitive on the global economic stage?

Whoever is advising the city has no clue where the ‘state of the art” in network infrastructure is, or how fast it is going to the next plateau of network speeds.

Get me some Smartphones and I will show you how fast that bandwidth gets eaten up by those end-user devices which are quickly becoming the “device-of-choice” as the new edge technology.

Other parameters the Chicago RFQ highlights are laughable at best, and technologically unacceptable at worst. Here are some excerpts of it that I have a problem with:

Providing the resources necessary for Businesses, Universities and other organizations to succeed and thrive is necessary for Chicago to remain a global leader and pioneer. Availability of and access to an affordable high-speed broadband network is now a critical component of urban infrastructure, similar to electricity, water, and roadways.

The infrastructure must be capable of providing 99.9% availability, be resilient with low latency and jitter, and ensure that packets sent and received at the network edges are identical.

You ARE NOT going to “remain a global leader and pioneer” with reliability rates of only 99.9% availability.

Do you really believe large businesses like the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Boeing, or any of the banks are going to trust their mission critical applications on networks that are running with only a 99.9% reliability?

Most businesses with mission critical applications want the insurance of 99.995% to 99.999% availability rates. With enterprise-wide mission critical applications currently at one-out-of-three and quickly growing to one-out-of-two applications, who is going to want to use a 99.9% reliable network?

Maybe if we relate it to snow storms, Chicago might “get it”. Don’t ask for one ton of salt when you really need 1,024 tons to get businesses moving and competitive.

Something more visual? You look absolutely foolish chanting “we’re going to be Number one” from your two horsepower horse-and-buggy parked on the NASCAR track amongst the other 1,200-horsepowered cars lining up for the race.

That’s the problem when political leaders and their advisers are technologically Amish. Understand the technology, know how to apply it, and get someone who is not a cheerleader to tell you how you are perceived on the world’s racetrack of economic viability and sustainability.

CARLINI-ISM: When it comes to network speeds, you need to be the fastest to say you’re world class.

The Key to Staying Young? Excercise!

A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that adults who exercise more tend to be less susceptible to mental and physical health problems including depression, dementia, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

The English Longitudinal Study of Aging studied 3,500 adults (average age 64 years old) and collected data on their physical activity level every two years between 2002-2003 and 2010-2011. The participants were then categorized by the amount they exercised each week and divided into three categories – no activity, moderate activity and vigorous activity. The researchers also tracked serious health problems (including mental health) suffered by the participants and found a strong correlation between health and exercise as the participants aged.

The results showed a clear correlation between “healthy aging” and exercise level. Adults who practiced moderate or vigorous exercise at least once a week were 3-4x more likely to age healthier than adults who did not exercise. While this association is not a clear cause-and-effect relationship, the fact is that adults who were active in the beginning of the study were 7 times more likely to have fewer health problems than adults who did not exercise for the entirety of the study. Twenty percent of all participants were considered to be healthy agers, and of the 1 in 10 participants that became active over the study, 70% stayed active.

If you have special needs kids, that’s not my problem, shut them up and shut them down, put them where I can’t see them, nor hear them. They’re a NUISANCE.

This is essentially what two Malaysian citizens have to say about a day care center for special needs in their neighborhood, they have filed a case against the school and want it removed from their locality.

To quote them from the article linked above:

“The applicants have suffered nuisance throughout the day from 8.30 am to 5pm, Monday to Friday as a result of intolerable noise made by the special children as well as their attendants and carers.

(The applicants have suffered) nuisance of experiencing the uncomfortable sensation of seeing the disabilities and sufferings of all the special children, the whole day, day in day out.”

What is it to me, and why am I writing about this?

My friend helps run the Bangsa Ria Day Care Center , and her son is one of the students.

But that is not the point.

I have been to this school. Watching the smiles of the people who work there, and the special kids they share their day with, is an incredibly joyous experience.

But that is not the point either.

That’s not my day care center, my son doesn’t go there, heck, I’m not even a mother. That’s not my neighborhood, Kuala lumpur is not my city, Malaysia is not my country. What business is it of mine if this little daycare thingie gets shut down? I can make a few sympathetic, clucking noises to my friend, and move on with life.

Chocolate Cheesecake Recipe

Chocolate Cheesecake

Serving Size: 2” slices

 

Ingredients:

 

4 oz fat free cream cheese

16 oz fat free sour cream

2 tbsp graham cracker crumbs

4 oz Neufchatel cheese, softened

1 cup sugar

½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 tsp chocolate extract

spray Canola oil cooking spray

1 tbsp cornstarch

8 oz fat free egg substitute

 

Directions:

 

1. Preheat the oven to 300°F. Coat the bottom of a 9″ springform pan with nonstick cooking spray. Dust the pan with graham cracker crumbs.

2. In a mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, cream cheese, Neufchatel cheese, and vanilla and beat at medium speed until smooth.

3. Add the sugar and cornstarch, beat until well blended.

4. Add the egg substitute, 1/4 cup at a time; beat at low speed just until blended.

5. Then add the cocoa powder and chocolate extract and beat until well blended.

6. Spoon the mixture into the prepared pan. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes. Turn off the oven and partially open the oven door. Allow it to sit for 1 hour. After one hour, remove it from the oven, cover and chill it for 8 hours.

Easy Food Substitutions to Improve Your Health

While we all have our guilty pleasures when it comes to food, there are a number of easy food substitutions that can help make dieting and eating healthy a little easier.

Most of us enjoy our morning cup of coffee to kick-start our day and rather than making a full substitution (which may be hard for the die-hard coffee fan like me) it is easy to cut calories by ordering coffees made with nonfat milk rather than full milk. Grande nonfat Cappuccinos from Starbucks also only contain 80 calories compared to grande Caffe Latte which have 200.

One of the most common guilty pleasures, ice cream, can be easily substituted for nonfat frozen yogurt which is lower in saturated fat and calories. If you are going for ice cream, try low fat versions of your favorites and use fruit toppings rather than candy or chocolate.

Using nonfat Greek yogurt instead of sour cream or mayo will also save you on calories and fat and is a better source of protein as well. Additionally, if you are making a salad use nuts instead of croutons to cut on salt and increase protein.

There are a number of good substitutions for using oil in your baking as well. ¾ cup to 1 cup of unsweetened applesauce as well as mango, banana or avocado puree mixed with nonfat milk can be used for 1 cup liquid oil. Cutting out oil not only helps to lower cholesterol by avoiding high fats in oils but also can help to lose weight by cutting calories and improving overall health.
